Technical Outerwear, Explained
GORE-TEX, membranes, and the pieces where the engineering is the point.
Technical outerwear is the only corner of menswear with a spec sheet you can actually check, which makes it both the easiest category to buy well and the easiest to overbuy. A three-layer alpine shell is a genuinely superior object. It is also more jacket than a city winter ever asks for.
The pieces below are the ones in the catalog where the construction is doing the work — laminates, taped seams, membranes with names. Read the warmth rating alongside the spec: a shell rated 2 is not a coat, it is a layer.
How to choose
- A shell keeps weather out. It does not keep you warm — that is the layer under it.
- Two-layer, two-and-a-half, three-layer: the number is about durability and breathability, not waterproofness. All of them keep rain out on day one.
- Face fabric weight tells you more about how a shell wears than the membrane does.
