Three hundred dollars is the line where winter footwear stops being a compromise. Below it you can still get a GORE-TEX membrane, a real outsole and a last that fits — you just have to know which brands spend the money on the shoe instead of the marketing.

The list below is ordered by weather rating first and price second, because the mistake nearly everyone makes is buying the good-looking pair and then not wearing it in February. A sneaker that lives in the closet from December to March is not cheaper than a boot that does not.

How to choose

  • If it will see snow or salt, start at warmth 4 and up — everything below that is a dry-day shoe wearing winter colors.
  • A waterproof membrane is worth more than insulation for most people in most cities. Wet feet get cold; cold feet in dry socks mostly do not.
  • Check the resale line. Several of these trade under retail on StockX, and footwear is the one category where buying secondhand deadstock is genuinely low-risk.
